We Revitalize

We give LIFE to the Capital of Dacia

HOW

Through the revitalization and valorization of the restored historical monument.

WHO

The project promoter, the Romanian and the Norwegian partner involve the target groups in accomplishing the revitalization activities. We work together with people: inhabitants of Hunedoara County, Romanian and foreign tourists, pupils and students, cultural entrepreneurs, the scientific and academic community.

How does the vast range of our revitalization activities look like:

1. Come to Lapidarium.
We build charming exhibition pavilions.

We install this structure to serve a double role: on one hand, to accommodate and protect people throughout the event of a storm, and on the other hand, to shelter the lithic pieces with priceless archaeological value. This Lapidarium type open structure will be organically integrated into the natural landscape. The activity also includes arrangements to drain the rainwater in the nearby fortification to prevent the water to access the masonry and monolithic structures; increasing the visitor capacity in the fortress area, the removal of the dying and intrusive trees, the restoration of the low-lying vegetation with plants native to the area.

2. Work as a craftman.
We organize two craft fairs with practical demonstrations and a lot of authenticity.

We are the trendsetters of traditional crafts and promoting cultural education, which, at the moment, is not part of the formal educational curriculum. Cultural education activities will be implemented innovatively from the stem point of current educational methods. Through experimentation, demonstration, interaction, and intercultural dialogue we will carry out cultural education activities. The two editions of the crafts fair will include the exhibition of crafts goods, cultural-artistic programs, workshops to demonstrate and experiment with crafts. We encourage young people to take over these occupations by creating a connection between them and the holders of traditional knowledge. This kind of experiment encompasses the essence of multicultural values in the area by adapting to the current world, possibly generating revenue.

3. Become one of the protectors of heritage.
Through a special program, we shape a respectful generations towards their heritage.

We train 50 adults and young people in the area to become the next protectors of the heritage. The activity has several aspects:

1. First we establish the terms for the interactive training workshops, alongside the international expert from Paris.

2. The next step is to organize 6 interactive training workshops for adults and young people, in cooperation with history teachers, for them to get to know the history of the European archaeological cultural heritage and to learn how to interact as future protectors of the European archaeological cultural heritage of Sarmizegetusa.

3. We are developing a pedagogical guide for future protectors of the European archaeological cultural heritage of Sarmisegetusa.

4. We organize a public event, together with the local and county authorities, to give a start-up and certify the protectors.

5. We have an evaluation session at the end of the season, after the first year of implementation, so that we can adapt to the terms of the next 2 years of implementation.

6. We organize yearly an artistic cultural event, to award the most dedicated protectors of the European archaeological cultural heritage – Sarmizegetusa.

4. Little archaeologists in action.
We're opening the doors to summer schools for children with teaching archaeology in mind.

We want the young generations to understand the role of archaeology, in general, for the community around Sarmizegetusa Regia, in particular, by implementing a non-formal education program for the young generation coming from 8 rural communities of Orăștioara de Sus: Bucium, Orăștioara de Sus, Ludești, Costești-Deal, Ocolișul Mic, Ludeștii de Sus, Grădiștea Muncelului, from Hunedoara County and from all around the country. We will start with 30 children in each summer school in the study of archaeology by engaging them in a series of creative activities for them to develop personally and skill-wise. One of the long-term strategies of the project partner, the Mihai Eminescu Trust Foundation, which will organize these summer schools, is the idea of focusing on educating the young generations and cultivating insight into archaeology as a whole, which should raise respect towards the cultural heritage, give a sense of belonging and responsibility towards the intangible heritage. Thus, the proposed project is a step forward in the sense of realizing this vision.

5. We are spreading information about the project.
We make sure that everyone will see the project through promotions.

We procure services to ensure the visibility of the project, we organize seminars and press conferences during the project's key moments. Through these approaches, we advertise the financing provided to the project by the EEA Grant. All information materials and marketing will comply with the mandatory elements provided in the Visibility Guide specific to the EEA grant.

6. We are modeling.
The construction phases of the wall are translated into a captivating miniature model.

We make a 3D model of the construction phases of the wall - Dacian and Roman - in correlation with the vestiges of the sacred area. It is very fascinating that the wall is represented both at the level of the current situation and at the height assumed in antiquity. The miniature model is located on different parts of the pathway and will be accompanied by descriptions and explanations in Romanian and English, but also in the Braille alphabet (sign language).

7. We are placing the creative INFO-EDU totems.
We build and install an electronic signage system that we suggestively called: "Info-edu totems".

We are developing and installing an electronic billboard that we have called: "Info-edu totems". It will be powered and operated exclusively by solar energy and, in order to be energy efficient, it will only be activated when somebody approaches it. The totem will provide information about the monuments and directions, architectural details and information about the features of the wall. Two characters will be built and they will provide information to the tourists: one that resembles a Dacian for the panels inside the wall and a Roman one for the totems located outside. The totem has the shape and size inspired by the Dacian culture – a warrior.

8. Listen to the story.
Find out fascinating details about the fortification wall with the help of the bilingual audio guide.

Bilingual (Romanian-English) tourist guidance audio systems provide scientific information and tell stories about the fortification wall, in an attractive manner for our visitors.

9. Discover the Info-Edu-Cult Kit
An information and cultural education program for children and young people.

It is an innovative idea: a detachable inflatable balloon-like tent with bean bags and a projection screen. It's a relaxed, friendly environment perfect for exchanging knowledge. The tent can accommodate at least 30 people who are willing to take part in various activities, has a textile flooring of 100 sq m. It is the ideal learning and experimentation setting for any age.

10. Introducing the project.
We are developing a design kit, maps, handouts, infographics, banners and roll-ups all about the project.

First of all, we developed the project's design line and branding, sampled both in the style of the website and on the promotional materials, all in an integrated representation. Due to the creation of the design kit, the promotion materials have the same color palette, typography and look of the brand. We have to share 1000 free infographics paired with the site map and information, 1000 of flyers and handouts – all these being offered to visitors, once the purchase of the ticket has been made. Two roll-ups and one banner – located right at the entrance in Costești, on the road which leads to Sarmizegetusa Regia – they're also work as a welcoming banner.

11. We are visible.
Through billboards and an information plaque with details on the project.

Throughout the duration of the project we have installed a panel with all the necessary details, in accordance with the visibility requirements of the financing program. No later than six months after the completion of the project, a permanent board will take the place of the panels.

12. Step into a new reality.
We're developing an intelligent IT application that will tell the history of the monument.

Reintegration of the historical monument into the community space and its promotion by unconventional methods such as programming an IT application, installed and managed from the mobile phone/tablet, which brings back the history of the monument. The monument will be visualized on the screen, through the magic of augmented reality. How? By simply orienting the smartphone camera towards the historical monument, the screen will display its reconstructed image in a situated simulation. The smart app will run algorithms that identify areas of the historical site and display on the device screen an image of which virtual holograms from another historical period will be added, thus creating a merge of the real world and the virtual world.

13. Follow us everywhere.
We build and update the project presentation website.

Our project is developed in partnership with a Norwegian association, so the presentation page of the project is bilingual – Romanian/English. At the same time, we are also present in social media, along with the website, in an integrated way. Our virtual portfolio has appropriate and well-documented content, videos, and 3D representations of the location, news, and updates from the progress stage.

 14. Forge the iron.
We're waiting for you at the Dacian blacksmith's workshop.
