The restoration works of the Sarmizegetusa Regia

As we told you, until the restoration works of the Sarmizegetusa Regia site begin, we will continue to talk about the characteristics of the archaeological architecture of Sarmizegetusa Regia, to understand what this process entails.


In its preserved form, Sarmizegetusa Regia fortress was built in the Roman Era after the dismantling of the Dacian fortification. Characteristics of the fortress:

1. The access through three openings - the West Gate which is supposed to be the main access, the East Gate which connected the sacred area and the West Gate, and also the South Gate which had a secondary role.
2. Walls between 3 and 4 meters thick, made of two facings consisting of scattered stone blocks, reinforced with wooden beams (identified through archaeological research of the year 2021).
3. A considerable area of the paved road named the ancient sacred path was discovered in the area of the East Gate.
4. The site is located on a prolonged mountain ridge with man-made terraces arranged on steep slopes since the Dacian era, surface crossed by small springs and deciduous forests.
