The Capital of Dacia A Living Museum of the European Cultural Heritage

This project is financed with the support of EEA Grants 2014 – 2021 within the RO-CULTURE Programme

The EEA Grants represent the contribution of Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway towards a green, competitive and inclusive Europe. There are two overall objectives: reduction of economic and social disparities in Europe, and to strengthen bilateral relations between the donor countries and 15 EU countries in Central and Southern Europe and the Baltics.

RO-CULTURE is implemented in Romania by the Ministry of Culture through the Project Management Unit. The Programme aims at strengthening social and economic development through cultural cooperation, cultural entrepreneurship and cultural heritage management.

WE give life to the capital of Dacia

  • First we invest resources in the restoration of the monument.
  • Then we value it through a concrete and dynamic plan, oriented towards the public.
  • During this time, we are trained and guided in every aspect by international professionals in the field.
  • We devote time and invest sustained effort in project management, a key component in the success of the project.
Through the revitalization and valorization of the restored historical monument.
The project promoter, the Romanian and the Norwegian partner involve the target groups in accomplishing the revitalization activities. We work together with people: inhabitants of Hunedoara County, Romanian and foreign tourists, pupils and students, cultural entrepreneurs, the scientific and academic community.

The ensemble of ancient monuments from the Orăștie Mountains now benefits from the project of putting in value "Capital of Dacia - Living Museum of the European Cultural Heritage".

In the last decade, several good things have happened to these monuments than in the last half century, with the help of local authorities ( Hunedoara County Council ), central (National Heritage Institute, under the leadership of arch. Șt. Bâlici) and with the contribution of extended archaeological research supported by Babeș-Bolyai University of Cluj.

The results already accumulated are goods gained and open prospects more than promising. The present project contributes decisively to the structural consolidation of the fortification from Sarmizegetusa Regia (absolutely necessary and welcomed) and, through the educational component, to increase visibility of the site, implicitly, to protect it by sensitizing local communities and visitors to the idea of the immense cultural value that these monuments represent.

Through this project, designed and implemented by professionals, which adds to all efforts combined in recent years, the site is waking up to a new life and asserting, once again, its rightful place in the contemporary cultural landscape.
